Both magical and rugged, the Mendocino Coast draws me back time and time again. It’s the perfect place to connect with loved ones, immerse yourself in nature, and simply relax.
If you’re seeking world-class cuisine, breathtaking views, and an authentic experience, visit the historic bed and breakfast, Elk Cove Inn & Spa. It’s situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and in the 1880’s, the property was L.E. White Lumber Co. superintendent’s home. Later, it became one of the first bed and breakfasts in Mendocino County. We happened to stay in the L.E. White Suite that’s located in a Craftsman-style bungalow and it was very cozy with a fireplace, jacuzzi tub, and a comfy King size bed. There’s a private balcony with an ocean view and it’s easy to spend hours on end looking out at the alluring ocean and listening to the peaceful sound of crashing waves.
Each morning, a hearty breakfast was delivered directly to my suite – a special treat! Taking in the stunning coastline while sipping hot coffee and indulging in gourmet egg dishes such as scrambled eggs with truffle oil and cheese started my mornings off on the right note! Following breakfast, I enjoyed walking the inn’s private trail that leads down to the beach for a seaside stroll. Greenwood State Park and Beach and the small town of Elk are located nearby and are also nice places to explore.
My favorite pastimes at the inn included lounging underneath the gazebo that’s perfectly situated for taking in dramatic views and wandering the outside garden. I later stumbled upon a greenhouse, honey bees, and a flock of chickens. Chef Passalacqua and his wife Melissa run a sustainable operation, which involves little waste. Some of the many green initiatives include giving restaurant leftovers to chickens onsite, while wine bottles are upcycled as a pathway decoration.
Chef Passalacqua previously worked at various Michelin-starred restaurants and cooks eclectic French cuisine and Melissa is a Certified Sommelier and Wine Educator. Together they are a wonderful team that bring the best of food and wine for guests to enjoy at their restaurant onsite, Sibo.
My boyfriend, Matthew and I enjoyed a soul-warming meal at Sibo and upon arrival, our ocean view table was beautifully set for two. Matthew and I both started out with a glass of local Husch LaBlanc wine and it paired nicely with pâté de Champagne. To follow, we each had a bowl of foraged mushroom soup that was rich, creamy, and had wonderful umami flavors.
As for entrees, I had pan-seared salmon with champagne butter and it was topped with a delicious honey and onion compote. Matthew had beef short rib bourguignon and it paired nicely with a glass of local Husch Pinot Noir.
For dessert, we shared the chocolate mousse and apple galette – both were delightful!
Throughout my stay, I noticed the many thoughtful touches of the Innkeepers – for example, a generous welcome basket that included popcorn, snack bars, hot cocoa packets, and a half bottle of Husch wine wine.
Overall, the dramatic views, warm hospitality and delicious cuisine made for a very memorable stay!
