Recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing Bucher Vineyard Farm Stay, two unique short rentals located on John and Diane Bucher’s estate vineyard. The Farm Stays and vineyard are located 5 miles outside of Healdsburg on Westside Road in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley. It’s a wine country oasis that awaits the discerning wine enthusiast and nature lover alike.
Proprietor and Grape Grower John Bucher is a fourth-generation farmer, and his family has been farming in the Russian River Valley since 1958. Originally an organic dairy farm, he diversified the farming operation by planting the first pinot noir vines in 1997. Today, Bucher Vineyard consists of 40 acres of Pinto Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc grapes that are sold to notable Sonoma County wineries such as Williams Selyem, Merry Edwards, and Papapietro Perry.
In addition to the Vineyard and Farm Stays, the Buchers also operate J Bucher Wines that produce Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Rosé of Pinot Noir from their estate vineyard, The wines can be purchased from their website or purchased at Grand Cru Custom Crush, where they make their wines. You can also reserve a private tasting of their wines at Grand Cru.
During my 3 night stay at the Cottage, I had the pleasure of interacting with the dynamic husband and wife duo, John and Diane. We embarked on a vineyard tour, delving into their sustainable vineyard that spans 15 distinct blocks and is planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. As we explored the vineyard, analyzing its diverse soil types, they shared valuable insights into cultivating thriving vines. Learning about the fascinating ‘ground to glass’ journey proved to be both enjoyable and highly educational.
The Bucher Wines Team includes John, Diane, and renowned winemaker, Adam Lee (Siduri, Clarice Wine Co., Beau Marchais). They all pour their heart and soul into ensuring that every bottle encapsulates the unique terroir of Healdsburg. The result are wines that speak of the land it comes from and the love and care that goes into its creation.
The Bucher’s picturesque farm stays overlook the expansive vineyards of the Russian River Valley towards Mount Saint Helena and the Mayacamas Mountains. The recently remodeled Cottage and Studio offer an experience that is nothing short of exceptional. The Cottage, a self-contained retreat, is a haven for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. The Studio has everything you need in a single room with a private bathroom. It also has a full kitchen so you can make your own elaborate meals or just use the coffee maker and toaster. Imagine waking up to a panoramic view of grapevines stretching as far as the eye can see, the gentle hum of nature your only soundtrack.
The farm stays are designed with a keen sense of style and comfort. Every nook and cranny reflects the Bucher’s commitment to offering their guests a truly immersive wine country experience. Whether you’re enjoying a glass of their signature Pinot Noir on the terrace or curling up with a book in one of the cozy corners, these farm stays promise moments of pure relaxation and serenity. When booked together, the units are perfect for two couples traveling together and sharing a car.
Bucher Farm Stay, with its prime location, serves as the perfect base to explore the myriad of experiences that Sonoma County has to offer. From the farm stay base on Westside Road, you’re less than 10 minutes’ drive from downtown Healdsburg and all the fun this quaint town has to offer.
Whether you’re a seasoned oenophile or just dipping your toes into the world of farming or winemaking, the Buchers promise an experience that’s both memorable and stylish.
With a lengthy farming tradition and history, the Bucher Family seeks to share their grape growing and winemaking experiences with guests for many years and generations to come.
